  • From Stressful to Successful: A Mom’s Little Spoon Review on Feeding Three Picky Boys

Being a mom to three picky eaters is stressful on so many levels. I struggle with wanting to add different foods into our rotation, but knowing that most likely they won’t even try anything new!

The battle at every meal is exhausting and rotating the same few meals daily gets old and boring.

When I first saw Little Spoon, it piqued my interest right away. It wasn’t until I actually browsed their website that I decided to give them a try.

I saw all of the options that were packed with hidden veggies and superfoods and knew we had to at least give them a try.

Our Experience Eating Little Spoon Kids Meals

little spoon lunchers with the kids

When my kids saw the Little Spoon box get delivered to our front door, they wanted to know what was in the fun box with fruits and veggies on it.

We opened it together and they immediately started grabbing for the bright colored packages inside. One of the first meals they saw was the peanut butter and jelly lunchers, which had a funny picture of the pb&j dressed up as people and they started laughing and wanting to open it to see what was inside.

All of the meals were packed nicely in an insulated box with ice packs and I was happy to see that nothing was broken open during delivery (which has unfortunately happened to us with other meal delivery services).

Now let’s get into each meal that we received and what my kids thought about it. Of course I took a little bite of each meal too because I was curious and wanted to be able to talk about the taste.

Little Spoon Lunchers- PB Jammies

The PB Jammies are mini whole wheat bread bites with peanut butter, strawberry jam and sprinkles to add to the top.

Two of my three boys eat peanut butter and were very excited to try these. They don’t usually like whole wheat bread, so I was curious if they’d notice! They liked helping to spread the peanut butter and jelly and loved adding the sprinkles to the top (so smart and I’d never think to do that).

They loved the taste and ended up finishing the whole plate. I took a bite and have to say it was very tasty. This was definitely their favorite of all the meals. Everything was perfect and we don’t think anything needed to be changed on this meal.

My kids were very impressed and my son is excited to take this as a lunch to school.

Mac + Three Cheese with Invisible Butternut Squash + Carrots

This meal was listed on their site as one of their most popular and I can see why.

It was easy to heat up in the microwave right in the plate and none of my kids hesitated to try it. They all liked it and said that it was similar to another mac + cheese that they love to eat.

I told them that there was butternut squash and carrots in it and they all grabbed a spoon. I tasted it and agreed that it had a nice flavoring. They all kept going back for more bites until they eventually finished it (which made me very happy).

The one thing that I can say is that this portion size seemed on the smaller side for my kids who are 4, 7 and 9. But overall, they loved the meal.

Easy Cheesy Pizza

Pizza is always a fan favorite in our house, so I was curious to see how they would react to it being on mini flatbreads (which they’ve never tried).

This meal came with three mini flatbreads, marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese and chocolate gems. They liked making their own individual pizzas and deciding how much cheese to add. They were a little confused that it wasn’t hot but quickly got over that and tried it.

They all really liked this one and the each finished their portion. They also really liked the chocolate gems and asked me to send this meal to school with them next week. They didn’t have any complaints at all and as a school lunch (or home) I felt as though the portion size was perfect.

Guac Nacho Dips

All of my kids are big fans of tortilla chips and dipping them, so I had a feeling they would like this one!

This meal consisted of a Mexican style four cheese blend, guacamole, mini tortilla chips and a banana chocolate chip muffin.

When we opened this one they were really happy to see the chips and shredded cheese. We made the nachos together and they each dipped theirs into the guacamole. My kids love avocados but don’t always like guacamole depending on what’s added to it.

They liked this guacamole because it tasted plain to them. I tried it and agree that it just tasted like mashed up avocado. They felt like the banana chocolate chip muffin was a cupcake and ate it very fast! I did manage to get a taste in and it was delicious.

I think the only thing that could be improved with this meal was the difficulty that they would have if they had to open this on their own at school. I had to cut the packet of guacamole and couldn’t open it by hand. But the taste and the quality of this meal was a favorite in my house.

Chicken Dunkers

My kids were very interested to try these breaded chicken nuggets which also came with a yogurt ranch dip, a brownie and pretzels with pizza flavored seasoning.

When I opened it, I immediately noticed that the portion size on this was perfect for all my kids ages 4 through 7. There were five chicken nuggets (packed with antibiotic free chicken, cauliflower, kale, carrots and chia seeds) which is about how many they normally eat.

Once again, my one son was confused why they would be eating cold chicken nuggets (I heated it up for him as he requested) buy my youngest wasn’t bothered and took a bite immediately. He loved it and kept saying “yum” over and over.

My middle wasn’t as impressed with the chicken but loved to dip the pretzels in the yogurt dip and they all really enjoyed the brownie. I think this is a great easy lunch idea for kids and everything was easy for them to open if I decided to send it to school with them.

Brunch Lunch

This meal included chicken maple sausage, a pitaya bowl, zucchini muffin and hemp hearts granola. My children aren’t usually fans of chicken sausage, so I didn’t mention that it was chicken. They took bites of the sausage and had mixed feelings. Two of them said it wasn’t their favorite, but my youngest loved it. He ended up eating all of them (four came in the meal).

They all liked the pitaya bowl and the granola, and they all really enjoyed the zucchini muffin (which I can never get them to eat when I make them!!) I tasted the pitaya and liked the flavor of it and am happy that my kids enjoyed it since they have never tried it.

Overall I wouldn’t change anything about this meal and I think if my kids were more open to chicken sausage that this would be perfect!

Why Did We Choose to Try Little Spoon?

As a mom to extremely picky children, I often feel like I need to expose them to new foods and also get worried that they’re not eating enough fruits and vegetables.

The issue with picky children is that they aren’t usually open to trying new meals that I make for them. That means that I spend a lot of time, money and effort and it usually goes to waste.

When I heard about Little Spoon, I liked the idea of ordering one of each meal and figuring out which ones they liked.

My children do not like most of the school lunches and when I saw the ingredients in Little Spoon I knew it would be a great, healthy option to try. I liked the idea of easy, non processed foods that weren’t full of junk.

Tips For Choosing The Right Meals For Your Kids

When I chose the meals for my kids, I decided to look for meals that were similar to what they have already tried. Who knows your kids better than you?!

I knew there were some meals that even though they were listed as “Picky Eater Favorite” that my children would most likely refuse. For me, I am trying to replace the unhealthy options for a similar but healthier alternative.

For example, my kids love Mac + Cheese, so when I saw the hidden butternut squash and carrots hidden, I realized that this could be a great alternative. I urge you to read about what is in each meal when making your decisions and also pay attention to the key allergens which are listed on each meal.

Closing Thoughts

Overall I feel that Little Spoon has delivered a great service for parents of infants up until age 10. They serve healthy meal options in a variety of meals, snacks, smoothies and more. The delivery subscription takes the burden off parents, and offers tasty and healthy meals for kids. My kids, who are extremely picky, loved a majority of the food that they tasted.
